TNI Bureau: Bejoy Nambiar directed ‘David’ is not an excellent movie but we should praise the young director’s approach for the experiment he has made. Though we have seen the concept earlier where three episodes are amalgamated to make one film, still the film deserves acclamation for the rich performances by the actors though the script is poor.
Film ‘David’ is a mishmash of three stories taken from three different places in three different times and three types of character, only the character’s name being the same, David.
Story 1 – David (Neil Nitin Mukesh) is based in London in 1975. Ghani, a dreadful and a very powerful gangster brings up him and showers him with all his love, something which even his biological son is deprived of. Neil is very much grateful to him who thinks that the world starts and ends with his father-figure Ghani. So here David is a gangster.
Story 2 – David (Vinay Virmani) hails from a lower middle class Christian family in Mumbai in 1999, is an aspiring singer. He use to play guitar and the instrument can be considered as his part of body. He is notorious but responsible and his father is a compassionate one, who dreams big for the son in the music field.
Story 3 – David (Vikram) is a fisherman from Goa in 2011. He sinks into alcohol for having been betrayed by his would-be wife. Hence now he keeps safe distance from women and only confides his feelings to his dear friend Fenny, a petty body massage parlor owner.
Nambiar had made entry to Bollywood through ‘Shaitan’ and had earned much acclamation then. But this time, he fails to maintain the same for various reasons.

First of all, there is not any particular reason about why the three stories are part of one movie. Like in films like ‘Dus kahaniyan’ or ‘Darna mana hei’, we had different stories, but all of them were telling a bit about ‘darr’, fear. But here only the name ‘David’ is identical in all the three stories and nothing else. Yes, it is true that Nambiar has come up with a new idea, but we have already seen it earlier.
This is of course commendable that Nambiar has an unusual way of story-telling. And the film is full of action, romance in a right proportion.
Coming to performances, all the characters have performed their best and done justice to their roles. All the three pair is superb. Neil Nitin Mukesh looks stunning and has improved a lot with acting. Vikram is outstanding as usual. Vinay Virmani has also done his best as a struggling musician. The three divas in the film do hold great worth. Monica Dogra (Noor) looks lovely and also delivers an implausible performance. Isha Sharvani (Roma) has done an honest job and Tabu is the real game changer amongst the ladies, who actually happens to be the person, who steals the show as Frenny.
Just we did not find anything much interesting in the story offered by Nambiar and Natasha Sehgal. Cinematography and editing is good.
The film’s music includes 15 tracks composed by various composers. Anirudh Ravichander, composer of ‘Kolaveri Di’ has also created one of the tracks. To sum up, music is just okay.
Our verdict is, you should go and watch the film once, if you like style and experiment in films or if you are a fan of either Neil Nitin Mukesh or Vikram.
