The Union Cabinet on Wednesday cleared the Food Security ordinance ahead of the Monsoon session of Parliament. The urgency in approving the significant ordinance clearly indicates early polls in the country.
After it becomes a law, the bill will guarantee 5 kg rice, wheat or millet per person at Rs 3, 2 and Re.1 respectively per kg every month to 67 per cent of the population. The Congress hopes that the bill will help the party during election campaign and come to the power for third time.
The ordinance on Right to Food was immediately sent to the President for his consent after the Cabinet approved it amidst criticism from the opposition. It will be a tough challenge for the government that how it will fund the project. The government needs to spend Rs 1.25 lakh crore per year on the project to cover 67 per cent of the country’s 1.2 billion people.
