Mamata spends Rs 50 Lakh on KKR Felicitation

TNI Bureau: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee faced criticism for organising a grand celebration for the newly crowned IPL 5 champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) team.

Many ridiculed the move when she spent lavishly on the champions KKR by giving them golden lockets. Around Rs 50 lakh had been spent by the state government for the grand ceremony in Kolkata.

The KKR players were also honoured with gifts including 10-gram gold chain by the Cricket Association of Bengal.

However, the KKR co-owner Shah Rukh Khan, who is also the state’s brand ambassador, sees no wrong in the grand felicitation organised by the state government for his IPL-5 winning team.

“There is no harm in being happy and sharing happiness. Nobody should criticise it. It’s alright to be happy. Let’s not be political. It has been done because we all are happy. There is nothing wrong if we bring a bit of happiness to the city of joy,” he said.

The IPL team was waiting for the moment since last four seasons. This year, the team won the trophy and they should celebrate it with the people of Kolkata.

Mamata was looking overwhelmed and honoured the team with gifts and flowers. The team presented the trophy to Mamata outside the Writers’ Building.

Bengal’s Governor M K Narayanan also joined the celebration. The city had come to standstill on Tuesday morning as all the roads led to the Eden Gardens where the team was celebrating with crowds.
