First, they beheaded our soldiers. Now, they have tortured our man to death inside the prison on. Can we do anything other than saying “this is unacceptable”. Instead of lodging strong protests, it’s time for tough action, as Pakistan defies India, taking India’s silence for granted.

Chamel Singh, a resident of Pargwal district of Jammu & Kashmir, was beaten to death by the jail staff, while washing the clothes of prisoners. The incident occurred on January 15, 2013. And, the body was returned to his family in J&K after over two months.

The Pakistani media confirmed that he was tortured to death. The eyewitnesses corroborated the reports. The issue was taken up by many rights groups in Pakistan. Pakistani lawyer Tehseen Khan too said that Chamel was beaten up for objecting to the racist remarks against Indians. If that was the case, Chamel Singh should be treated as a martyr in India.

The 40-year-old Chamel was serving jail term for illegally crossing the border. He was arrested on charges of espionage in 2008. He was sentenced to five years in jail in August 2010.
