Headley’s Aide Tahawwur Rana sentenced to 14 Years in Jail

TNI Bureau: Tahawwur Rana, an aide of David Headley, who is accused of plotting Mumbai attacks, has been sentenced to 14 years in jail by a US court. He was convicted for providing support to Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) and plotting a terror strike against the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten.

Rana was sentenced by the Chicago federal court. Despite his lawyer’s defence, who sought lighter sentence for him citing poor health, the court ordered 14 years in jail for him.

However, the US prosecutors had sought 30 years in jail for Rana. He was convicted in June 2011 for his links with terror outfit and planning to strike the Danish newspaper.

Earlier, Rana was arrested in 2009 for his involvement in Mumbai attacks. However, the US court had acquitted him for that charge. Pakistan-born-Canadian citizen had moved to Chicago for business purpose, but plotted against India.

After Rana, Headley’s trial has been scheduled for January 24. He has been found guilty in all 12 counts including aiding to terror group that caused the deaths of six Americans.

He cooperated with the Government in October 2009 and preferred to be the government witness during Rana’s trial.
