PM announces New S&T Innovation Policy at Centenary Session of Indian Science Congress

TNI Bureau: Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh has announced the new Science and Technology innovation policy, 2013 at the Centenary Session of the Indian Science Congress in Kolkata today.

Dr. Singh handed over the first copy of the new policy to the President Mr. Pranab Mukherjee.

The President inaugurated the five-day long session at Salt Lake Stadium. The theme of the congress is-“Science for shaping the future of India.”

Mr. Mukherjee has emphasised on evolving an educational system, which imbibes a scientific culture and increased focus on innovation to compete in a globalised economy.

He also called upon the scientific fraternity to work in a time bound manner to help India win a Noble Prize in science, as he noted that its over 83 years long since C V Raman won the Noble Prize for Physics.

Congratulating Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for being elected as the general president of the Indian Science Congress in its centenary year, the President said “I can from personal experience vouch safe the abiding faith of Manmohan Singh on education, science and technology.”

Addressing the session, Prime Minister stressed the need for innovation and experiment in the field of science and technology for rapid and inclusive growth.

The Prime Minister also said that the transformation of agriculture must be top priority of public policies, including science and technology.

Union Science & Technology Minister Jaipal Reddy, Union Communication & Information Technology Minister Kapil Sibal, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and other dignitaries from the field of Science & Technology were also present on the occasion.
