TNI Bureau: The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance swept the municipal election in Punjab winning maximum seats. This is the second victory after the assembly polls in the state.
The ruling alliance won four municipal corporations, three municipal councils and 26 nagar panchayats in the polls held on Sunday. The alliance won 30 seats out of 59 in Jalandhar, 48 out of the 65 seats in Amritsar, and 42 seats out of the 70 results in the 75-member house in Ludhiana.
The results declared late in the evening showed that the alliance had a comfortable majority in all civic bodies.
However, Congress in Punjab seems to fade and the poll results are another setback for the party after assembly polls this year.
Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh said that the elections were “a murder of democracy”. He alleged that some Congress leaders were manhandled Sunday in Patiala.
Following the poll results, violence and clashes between Akali Dal and Congress were reported at some places in the state.
