India At London Olympics 2012: Day 2

TNI Bureau: The Indian players continued with their disappointing show on Day 2 at the London Olympics. However, Saina Nehwal and Jai Bhagwan brought cheer to the Indian contingent.

Badminton: Jwala Gutta and V Diju lost their second straight match to the Danish pair of Thomas Laybourn and Kamilla Rytter Juhl. They are virtually out of the medal race. However, World No. 2 Saina Nehwal started her Olympic campaign on a winning note, as she beat 65th ranked Swiss Sabrina Jaquet 21-9 21-4 in just 22 minutes.

Rowing: Rower Swarn Singh Virk won the repechage in singles sculls to enter the quarterfinals.

Archery: The World No. 2 trio of Deepika Kumari, Chekrovolu Swuro and Laishram Bombayala Devi went down 210-211 to Denmark’s Carina Christiansen, Maja Jager and Louise Laursen.

Table Tennis: India’s Soumyajit Ghosh went down to higher ranked Kim Hyok Bong of North Korea in the second round. He lost 11-9, 6-11, 5-11, 9-11, 7-11.

Boxing: Jai Bhagwan defeated Allisop Andrique in the Men’s Light (60 kg) category 18-8.

Shooting: Heena Sidhu and Annu Raj Singh bowed out of the women’s 10m air pistol event. They failed to qualify for the finals.

Lawn Tennis: Somdev Devvarman crashed out of the singles event. He lost the first round match to Finland’s Jarko Nieminen 3-6, 1-6.
