India At Olympics: August 4, 2012

TNI Bureau: India’s Saina Nehwal created history by winning the first medal for India in Badminton at the Olympics. She was given a walkover by her Chinese opponent in the bronze medal match, who sustained a knee injury in the midst of the match.

Devendro Singh of India too brought good news for India, as he stormed into the quarterfinals with a power-packed performance. Manoj Kumar lost out in Boxing, while Leander Paes and Sania Mirza bowed out of the Mixed Doubles in Lawn Tennis.

Badminton: Saina won the bronze medal in women’s singles after she got a walkover in the bronze medal match after her rival Xin Wang of China got injured. World No. 2 Xin Wang was leading 21-18, 1-0 when she collapsed and conceded the match.

Lawn Tennis: Leander Paes and Sania Mirza went down to top seeds Max Mirnyi and Victoria Azarenka (Belarus) 5-7, 6-7 in straight sets in the quarterfinals.

Boxing: Devendro Singh defeated Serdamba Purevdorj of Mongolia in the Men’s Light Fly (49kg) category boxing event to reach the quarterfinals. Manoj Kumar lost 16-20 to Britain’s George Stalker in a tough contest in the men’s light welter weight 64kg.

Atheletics: In Women’s Discus, Krishna Poonia finished seventh with a throw of 63.62m. In men’s 20 km race walk, Indian walker Irfan Kolothum Thodi created a national record, but finished 10th overall. Gurmeet Singh finished 33rd, while Baljinder Singh was at 43rd spot.

Sudha Singh bowed out of the  3000m Steeplechase with a poor performance. She finished 13th in her heat.

Rowing: Indian rowers Manjeet Singh/Sandeep Kumar finished 19th in the men’s lightweight double sculls final.

Shooting: Shagun Chowdhary finished a lowly 20th out of 22 competitors in the women’s trap event.
