Earlier, India won the toss and elected to bat first. Monty Panesar struck four times, as India slumped to 119/5 and then 169/6. However, Pujara and Ashwin added unbeaten 97 for the sixth wicket to save the day and put India on top.

At close, India finished at 266/6. Pujara was batting on 114, while Ashwin was on 60. Sehwag and Dhoni contributed 30 and 29 respectively. Panesar took four wickets. If India score over 300, it would be too difficult for England to stage a comeback in this match.
