TNI Bureau: In a shocking development, that stunned the media world, BBC Director-General, George Entwistle has resigned from the top post, taking moral responsibility for the Newsnight report, which wrongly implicated a politician in child sex abuse.
George Entwistle, who had succeeded Mark Thompson two months ago, had lost the confidence of Lord Patten, the Chairman of the BBC Trust. The Chairman had denounced the programme as shoddy journalism.
George Entwistle clarified that he was not aware of the Newsnight programme, but took responsibility as the Editor-in-Chief. Even as the BBC had issued an apology, Entwistle felt it appropriate to resign, as the issue had damaged the 90-year-old reputation of the BBC.
“As the director general of the BBC, I am ultimately responsible for all content as the editor-in-chief, and I have therefore decided that the honourable thing for me to do is to step down,” he said.
